Coaching and Psychotherapy

Please read carefully, provided are the distinctions between coaching and psychotherapy to ensure a clear understanding of these different practices in our work together.

Psychotherapy is considered a healthcare service and is often covered by health insurance policies, unlike coaching, which is not eligible for reimbursement. Both coaching and psychotherapy draw upon knowledge of human behavior, motivation, and counseling techniques, but they diverge in their primary goals, focus, and professional responsibility.

Coaching aims to help you develop and implement strategies to achieve your self-identified goals. Promoting enhanced performance and personal satisfaction and overall well-being. It may address various aspects of your life such as; personal projects, work-life balance, job performance, or overall well-being, employing techniques like personal strategic planning, values clarification, brainstorming, and motivational counseling.

On the other hand, psychotherapy is focused on identifying, diagnosing, and treating mental and nervous disorders. Its objectives encompass alleviating symptoms. Understanding underlying dynamics contributing to these symptoms. Changing dysfunctional behaviors resulting from the disorders, and developing coping mechanisms for life's psychological challenges. Research indicates that the quality of therapeutic relationships impacts psychotherapy progress. Psychotherapy clients often experience emotional vulnerability as they discuss intimate personal information, making trust essential in this process. Therapists also have responsibility to protect their clients' safety and well-being.

In coaching, the relationship between the coach and client is different, devoid of the power differentials that can arise in psychotherapy. You, as the client set the agenda, and the success of coaching hinges on your willingness to take risks and explore new approaches. The coaching relationship is designed to be more direct and challenging. With Alexis , as your coach, she will be providing honest feedback, presenting powerful questions, and challenging techniques to support your growth. If you find that coaching is not progressing as you desire, I encourage you to communicate this promptly, and together, we can take steps to address any concerns.

Given the potential conflicts in roles, I firmly believe that it is ethically inappropriate for one individual to fulfill both coaching and psychotherapy roles for a client, either concurrently or consecutively. If we recognize that you could benefit from psychotherapeutic intervention, I will gladly refer you to appropriate resources. In some cases, it may be necessary for you to initiate psychotherapy, and I might request access to your psychotherapist to effectively continue as your coach.

It is crucial to understand that coaching is a professional relationship, even though it may feel close and personal at times. Maintaining professional boundaries is vital during our work together and afterward, as blurred boundaries can jeopardize the benefits gained from our coaching relationship.
